MARK ALAN ANDERSON is an award-winning plein air painter, focused on outdoor places that are easy to overlook, and the changing light that makes them worth stopping for.
Working primarily in gouache, Mark paints outdoors in neighborhoods, fields, roadsides, and the places where nature and human activity meet. He is drawn to ordinary scenes rather than spectacular views: a quiet street, an old building, a field at the edge of town. Starting with a loose sketch, he simplifies what he sees into shapes, lines, color, and light, creating small paintings that are both observations of a place and records of having been there.
Born in Kansas City and raised in the rural landscapes of Missouri, Mark has spent a lifetime looking closely at the world around him. His path to painting has included a career as an award-winning graphic designer and more than twenty years as an art educator. Those experiences continue to shape his work, giving him a designer’s eye for structure and a teacher’s curiosity about how we learn to see.
Mark’s recent accolades include Best of Show awards at Arterie Plein Air, Paint Marceline, and Historic West Bottoms Plein Air Festival, along with awards from Rice Gallery of Fine Art and other regional plein air competitions.
